Modifications Most
of these modifications, except for Chapter 22.8, are minor. For instance,
the only change to 18.3 is the addition of the word "so" in the
first line, as it is in the original 1689. What you read here are the
entire sections as modified. This is also how they read if you go
to the appropriate section on this website. However, we have also
collected all the modified sections to this one page for the convenience
of those who want to see them all together. CHAPTER 18
3.
This infallible assurance of faith does not so belong to the essence of
faith, but that a true believer may wait for a long time, and struggle
with many difficulties, before he attains to it. It is not a matter of
extraordinary revelation, for if he makes a right use of the means of
grace, and is enabled by the Spirit to know the things that believers
receive freely from God, he may well attain to it. It therefore becomes
the duty of every one to be as diligent as possible in making his calling
and election sure. By doing this he will experience greater peace and joy
in the Holy Spirit, greater love and thankfulness to God, and an increased
strength and cheerfulness in dutiful obedience. These things are the
natural outcome of the assurance of salvation, and they constitute strong
evidence that assurance does not lead men into loose living. CHAPTER 22
7.
As it is a law of nature, applicable to all, that a proportion of time,
determined by God, should be allocated for the worship of God, so, by His
Word, he has particularly appointed one day in seven to be kept as a holy
day to Himself. Since the time of the New Testament, in
commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, this day has been the
first day of the week, and designated "the Lord's day." The
great privilege and priority on the Lord's day is to worship God with His
people. CHAPTER 26
4.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the head of the church. By the appointment of the
Father, all authority requisite for the calling, establishment, ordering
and governing of the church is supremely and sovereignly invested in Him.
It is impossible for the Pope of Rome in any true sense to be the head of
the church.
